dvd driver can not install

DVD Problem - Driver can not install

I've now read several messages here with people having the same problem with their DVD drives without a solution being posted. I have a Gateway M285E with an internal Philips DVD. I also tried hocking up an external USB DVD drive and still received the message that Windows can not load the device driver for this hardware. The internal is an ATA device the external a USB device. My point is that this problem is becoming universal. The Drive had to work to install Vista in the first place. The only thing I added was a download of the CA antivirus program. THe bottom line facts are:
1) Multiple people with all different brands of DVD drives and burners are reporting this problem. 2) They all had the device working during the install of Vista. 3) It Now fails after Vista is up and running.
Since so many people with different hardware are impacted there must be a comon thread.
Anyone have any ideas?
(I already tried unistalling and reinstalling the driver.)

I'll put my .02 in on this one as well.
I have a Phillips DVD +RW-D28 ATA that was working for the install of Vista from cd/dvd. I've tried the tricks of un-install and re-install. I've tried to point back to the XP Driver but my DVD drive still is not showing up. Phillips & Dell's site do not have any type of drivers for this drive Except for a firmware upgrade.

I searched for a solution and it had none. It asked if I could send this add'l information to microsoft and I applied yes. Is that the bug report you are referring to?
